Weekly Report: COVID-19 cases continue to fall in Coweta

THE SKINNY – Coweta County recorded the fewest number of weekly COVID-19 cases (Sept. 25-Oct. 1) in two months.

Below is a summary of COVID-19 data thru Friday, Oct. 1 from  the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County did confirm 169 new COVID-19 cases (24.1 per day) in the past week covering Sept. 25 through Oct. 1. Those 169 cases were the lowest weekly total since 97 (July 24-30) two months ago. It is the 5th consecutive week the Coweta case numbers have fell after setting a record-high of 634 a month ago (Aug. 28-Sept. 3). The cases were down by 82 from the previous week.

Coweta also saw a drop for a second straight week in deaths with 8 (down 5) and in hospitalizations with 30 – down 46 from a record-setting week of 76 from Sept. 18-24. 

Last week’s daily highs: 50 cases (Thursday), 4 deaths (Friday) and 21 hospitalizations (weekend of Sept. 25-27). 

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 123,954 vaccinations have been applied here in Coweta County through Oct. 1, including just 1,888 in the past week (down 1,379 from last week). Of those, 67,619 people or 47 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 59,798 or 42 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated. 

The positive test rate this week of all persons tested in Coweta was 11.2 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 12.2 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 11.2 and 13.3, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 12,305 cases, 285 deaths (with an additional 23 probable deaths) and 710 hospitalizations thru Oct. 1 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 24th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 17th in deaths due to COVID and 27th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA CASES

Georgia confirmed 18,646 new COVID-19 cases for an average of 2,663.7 per day for the reporting period of Sept. 25-Oct. 1. It was a decrease of 6,730 cases from last week’s reporting period (Sept. 18-24) and the lowest weekly total since July 24-30. Thursday’s daily total of 3,871 cases were the most in a single day last week for the state.

Other numbers of the past week also fell, including 635 deaths (down 121 from a week earlier), 1500 hospitalizations (down 552) and 149 ICU admits (down 55).  The daily highs last week – deaths 143 (Friday), hospitalizations 265 (Wednesday) and ICU admits 32 (Thursday).

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 10,544,914 vaccinations (146,827 in the past week, down 38,502 from the previous week) have been applied here in Georgia through October 1. Of those, 5,649,274 Georgia residents or 54 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 4,947,667 or 48 percent have been fully vaccinated.

Three of four patient census categories dropped from Sept. 25-Oct. 1. ICU Beds in Use fell by 57 and now stands at 2,773 or 92.6 percent capacity statewide. The number of COVID Patients Hospitalized dropped by 767 and is now at 3,173 or 19.1 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia. Adult Ventilators in Use fell by 201 and is at 1,647 or 40.7 percent capacity by the end of the week. 

In-Patient Hospital Beds in Use was the only category to see an increase, rising by 130 and now standing at 13,065 or 85.4 percent capacity. 

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.3 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 10.2 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.3 and 12.2, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,225,670 cases, 22,626 deaths, 81,112 hospitalizations and 12,885 ICU admits thru Oct. 1 from when the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8, 2021); deaths (184 on Feb. 12, 2021); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6, 2021); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12, 2020).
