Weekly Report: Coweta continues to see increases in new cases

THE SKINNY – For the sixth consecutive week, Coweta County has reported an increase in new COVID-19 cases.

Below is the weekly summary of COVID-19 data thru Wednesday, December 21 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY

Coweta County confirmed 176 new COVID-19 cases in the past reporting week of Dec. 15-21, which was an increase by 37 cases. It was the sixth week in-a-row that the county has seen a rise in cases. This week, the county average for new cases was 25.1 per day. Coweta also reported double-digit cases each of the seven days in the past week, the first time that’s happened since August 11-17, 2022.

Coweta also recorded 2 deaths, the most in a week since early September, and 18 hospitalizations (down 3).

Per the Georgia Department of Public Health, 199,598 vaccines have been applied to Coweta residents thru Dec. 21 with 460 last week. The Coweta and Georgia vaccination rates follow – Coweta is at 56 percent with one dose (Georgia is at 66 percent), 52 percent fully vaccinated (Georgia is at 58 percent), 46 percent have been fully vaccinated and had a booster shot (Georgia 46 percent), and 24 percent have had an additional dose (Georgia 27 percent).

The overall positive test rate in Coweta was 13.7 percent on Dec. 21, with the two-week infection rate increasing to 18.3 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 13.7 and 17.2, respectively.

Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 26,758 cases, 453 deaths (with an additional 67 probable deaths) and 2,042 hospitalizations through Dec. 21 from when the pandemic began some 33-plus months ago. Coweta ranks 19th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 14th in deaths due to COVID and 16th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA

Statewide, Georgia had increases in four of the five major COVID-19 categories for the week of Dec. 15-21.

Georgia confirmed 8,743 cases for an average of 1,249 per day last week, an increase of 1,417 new cases from the previous reporting period of Dec. 8-14. It’s the most cases in a week for the state since 8,967 from Sept. 1-7, 2022.

Other categories which saw increases included deaths with 84 (up 43), hospitalizations with 744 (up 140), and COVID patients hospitalized with 1,007 or 6.2 percent. That’s a rise of 180 COVID patients hospitalized statewide in the past week.

The only category to see a decline was ICU admits with 30, dropping by 9.

The overall positive test rate in Georgia this week is 12.5 percent, with the two-week infection rate increasing from 12.3 percent last week to 14.6 now.

Overall, Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 2,289,391 cases, 34,270 deaths, 132,413 hospitalizations and 17,289 ICU admits through Dec. 21 from when the pandemic began.
