THE SKINNY – Despite the much lower COVID-19 case numbers and deaths, Coweta County set a high mark with 13 hospitalizations in the past week.

The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Monday, May 31.  Below is a summary for the week of May 24-30 with data from the Georgia DPH on Coweta County, neighboring counties and the state of Georgia.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 24 new COVID-19 cases for the past week with 2 deaths and a record-high 13 hospitalizations.

The 13 hospitalizations (up 10 from last week) were the most in a single week since posting 12 twice (Feb 28-March 6, 2021 and Nov. 22-28, 2020). Coweta had consecutive days of 4 hospitalizations on Thursday and Friday, May 27-28, respectively.

The 24 confirmed cases (down 10 from a week ago) gave Coweta an average of 3.4 per day. It’s the lowest number of cases in a week in over a year when the county posted 21 cases from May 10-16, 2020. The high mark for cases last week was 11 on Tuesday, May 25. The county extended its streak to 82 consecutive days below 20 cases.

The 2 deaths the past week came off a week when Coweta recorded 0 from May 17-23.

In May, Coweta recorded 181 cases (5.8 per day), 4 deaths (0.1 per day) and 34 hospitalizations (1.1 per day).  Those numbers were slightly down when compared to daily averages in April –  8.2 cases per day,  0.8 deaths  and 1.3 hospitalizations.

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.3 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 3.4 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.4 and 3.9, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 8826 cases, 209 deaths (with an additional 13 probable deaths) and 383 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 23rd in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases and 18th in deaths due to COVID.

The age groups of 25-34 year olds had the most new COVID cases in the past week with 7.

GEORGIA CASES

In the past week, Georgia confirmed 2472 new COVID-19 cases (down 683 from a week ago) for an average of 353 per day. Georgia now owns a streak of 92 straight days below 2000 cases, the longest streak since March 30 to June 27 in 2020. The high for cases was 447 on Thursday, May 27. The week’s low was 200 cases on Sunday (May 30), the lowest for Georgia since the pandemic began.

Georgia also recorded 106 deaths in the past week (down 20 from a week ago) for an average of 15 per day. Other numbers included 575 hospitalizations (up 52) and 112 ICU Admits (down 10).

Three patient census categories dropped in the past week.  ICU Bed Occupancy fell to 2228 (down 47 from last week) or at 74.7 percent capacity. The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across decreased to 11,655 (down 321 from last week) or at 76.8 percent capacity. And COVID Patients Hospitalized in Georgia dropped by 138, now standing at 661 which is 4.5 percent of all statewide hospital patients.

The only category to rise slightly was Adult Ventilators in use now at 968 (up 2) or 27.0 percent capacity.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.0 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 2.8 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.1 and 3.2, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 896,081 cases, 18,068 deaths, 63,770 hospitalizations and 10,543 ICU admits since the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8); deaths (184 on Feb. 12); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12).

ONE YEAR AGO

On May 31, 2020, Georgia had confirmed a cumulative total of 47,063 new COVID-19 cases with 2053 deaths.

Coweta had confirmed 417 cumulative COVID-19, 9 deaths and 51 hospitalizations on this date a year ago.

Cumulative case and death totals in Coweta and surrounding counties thru May 31 had Fulton with 4524-235, Carroll at 525-24, Coweta 417-9,   Troup 313-11, Spalding 275-22, Fayette 235-13, Meriwether 85-2 and Heard 34-2.
