THE SKINNY – Coweta County posted 15 COVID-19 cases last week, its lowest weekly total of COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Monday, June 7.  Below is a summary for the week of May 31-June 6 with data from the Georgia DPH on Coweta County, neighboring counties and the state of Georgia.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 15 new COVID-19 cases for the past week with 3 deaths and a 4 hospitalizations.

The 15 confirmed cases (down 9 from a week ago) are the fewest recorded in a week by Coweta since the pandemic began. The previous low was 21 from May 10-16, 2020. Coweta’s average was 2.1 cases per day last week. The high mark during the week was 6 cases on Friday, June 4. The county extended its streak to 89 consecutive days below 20 cases.

The 3 deaths posted were up 1 from a week ago and the 4 hospitalizations (down 9 from last week) were a drastic drop from last week’s record-setting 13.

So far in June, Coweta has registered 15 COVID cases (2.5 per day), 3 deaths (0.5 per day) and 4 hospitalizations (0.6 per day). By comparison, Coweta’s May daily averages were 5.8 cases per day, 0.1 deaths and 1.1 hospitalizations.

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.2 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 2.3 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.3 and 3.4, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 8841 cases, 212 deaths (with an additional 13 probable deaths) and 387 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 23rd in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases and 18th in deaths due to COVID.

The age groups of 45-54 year olds had the most new COVID cases in the past week with 6.

GEORGIA CASES

In the past week, Georgia confirmed 1769 new COVID-19 cases (down 703 from a week ago) for an average of 252 per day. It included a record-low 174 cases on Tuesday, June 1, the lowest daily total since the pandemic began.  Georgia now owns a streak of 99 straight days below 2000 cases, the longest streak also since the pandemic began. The high for cases last week was 367 on Wednesday, June 2.

Georgia also recorded 121 deaths in the past week (up 15 from a week ago) for an average of 17 per day. Other numbers included 289 hospitalizations (down 286) and 103 ICU Admits (down 9).

Three patient census categories dropped in the past week.  ICU Bed Occupancy fell to 2218 (down 10 from last week) or at 74.6 percent capacity.  COVID Patients Hospitalized in Georgia dropped by 95, now standing at 566 which is 3.8 percent of all statewide hospital patients.  And Adult Ventilators in use now at 940 (down 28) or 26.3 percent capacity.

The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across Georgia increased to 11,766 (up 111 from last week) or at 77.4 percent capacity.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 10.9 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 2.3 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.0 and 2.8, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 897,663 cases, 18,189 deaths, 64,053 hospitalizations and 10,666 ICU admits since the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8); deaths (184 on Feb. 12); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12).

ONE YEAR AGO

On June 7, 2020, Georgia had confirmed a cumulative total of 51,898 COVID-19 cases with 2180 deaths.

Coweta had confirmed 463 cumulative COVID-19, 9 deaths and 53 hospitalizations on this date a year ago.

Cumulative case and death totals in Coweta and surrounding counties thru June 7 had Fulton with 4823-252, Carroll at 580-28, Coweta 463-9, Troup 426-11, Spalding 294-21, Fayette 245-15, Meriwether 106-2 and Heard 36-3.
