THE SKINNY – Coweta County eclipsed a pair of COVID-related milestones during the past week (Sept. 18-24).

Below is a summary of COVID-19 data thru Friday, Sept. 24 from  the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

In the past week (Sept. 18-24), Coweta County set new records for most weekly hospitalizations with 76 and most deaths in a month with 42. The previous high for hospitalizations was 50 (Aug. 21-27) and for deaths was 41, last occurring in February.

Coweta County confirmed 251 new COVID-19 cases last week for a 35.8 daily average. The county had 13 deaths (two shy of the previous week’s record-high 15) and also posted the record 76 hospitalizations (10.9 per day).

Last week’s daily highs: 42 cases (Friday), 5 deaths (Wednesday) and 11 hospitalizations (Thursday). The good news was Coweta was down 103 cases from the previous week (Sept. 11-17). Deaths were down by 2, but hospitalizations were up by 43.

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 122,066 vaccinations have been applied here in Coweta County through Sept. 24, including 3,267 in the past week. Of those, 67,026 people or 47 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 58,733 or 41 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated. By comparison, neighbor Fayette County has a vaccination rate of 64 percent with 1 dose and 58 percent fully vaccinated.

The positive test rate this week of all persons tested in Coweta was 11.2 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 13.3 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 11.1 and 18.4, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 12,136 cases, 277 deaths (with an additional 19 probable deaths) and 678 hospitalizations thru Sept. 24 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 24th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 17th in deaths due to COVID and 27th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA CASES

Georgia confirmed 25,376 new COVID-19 cases for an average of 3,624 per day for the reporting period of Sept. 18-24. It was a decrease of 4,840 cases from last week’s reporting period (Sept. 11-17). Tuesday’s daily total of 6,077 cases were the most in a single day last week for the state.

Other numbers of the past week included 756 deaths (up 102 from a week earlier), 2,052 hospitalizations (up 420) and 204 ICU admits (down 2). 

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 10,398,087 vaccinations (185,329 in the past week) have been applied here in Georgia through September 24. Of those, 5,606,732 Georgia residents or 54 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 4,880,158 or 47 percent have been fully vaccinated.

All four patient census categories dropped in the past week. ICU Beds in Use fell by 72 and now stands at 2,830 or 93.6 percent capacity statewide. The number of COVID Patients Hospitalized dropped by 1,104 and is now at 3,940 or 23.6 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia. That’s the lowest number since Aug. 12. In-Patient Hospital Beds in Use decreased by 391, now standing at 12,935 or 84.3 percent capacity. Adult Ventilators in Use fell by 156 and is at 1,848 or 45.5 percent capacity by the end of the week.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.3 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 12.2 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.3 and 15.1, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,207,024 cases, 21,991 deaths, 79,612 hospitalizations and 12,736 ICU admits thru Sept. 24 from when the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8, 2021); deaths (184 on Feb. 12, 2021); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6, 2021); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12, 2020).
