Weekly Report: More records set here in Coweta

THE SKINNY – Coweta County set five new COVID-19 records last week as the pandemic enters its 19th month since arriving in Georgia.
Below is a summary of COVID-19 data thru Friday, Sept. 3 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
COWETA COUNTY CASES
Coweta County established a new high mark for most COVID-19 cases in a week after confirming 635 during the reporting period of Aug. 28 through Sept. 3. Those 635 cases also meant a new daily high for cases per day – 90.7. The previous records were 530 and 75.7, respectively, set just a week earlier.
Also last week, Coweta confirmed 9 deaths and 44 hospitalizations. The 44 hospitalizations were just 6 shy of last week’s new milestone of 50.
Daily records set by Coweta included most cases (168, old record 160 on Dec. 31), most deaths (5, old record 4 last on April 15) and most hospitalizations (20, old record 10 last on Aug. 26, 2021).
Compared to a week earlier (Aug. 21-27), Coweta increased totals in cases (+105), deaths (+5) and dropped in hospitalizations (-6).
Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 112,999 vaccinations have been applied here in Coweta County through Sept. 3, including 2,370 in the past week. Of those, 62,323 people or 44 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 54,384 or 38 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated. Those vaccinated by gender here in Coweta – Females 47.5 percent and Males 40.9 percent. By comparison, neighbor Fayette County has a vaccination rate of 62 percent with 1 dose and 56 percent fully vaccinated.
The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.9 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 20.5 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.6 and 21.5, respectively.
Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 11,053 cases, 242 deaths (with an additional 14 probable deaths) and 532 hospitalizations thru Sept. 3 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 24th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 17th in deaths due to COVID and 32nd in COVID-related hospitalizations.
GEORGIA CASES
This past week, Georgia confirmed 47,676 new COVID-19 cases for an average of 6,810 per day. It was an increase of 2,096 cases from last week’s reporting period (Aug. 21-27). Friday’s daily total of 9,085 cases was the 2nd highest posted by Georgia since the pandemic began, trailing only 10,379 on Jan. 8.
Other numbers of the past week included 531 deaths (up 200 from a week earlier), 2,004 hospitalizations (down 129) and 191 ICU admits (up 13).
Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 9,793,897 vaccinations (217,940 in the past week) have been applied here in Georgia through September 3. Of those, 5,355,744 Georgia residents or 51 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 4,565,943 or 44 percent have been fully vaccinated.
Three of four patient census categories rose in the past week. The number of COVID Patients Hospitalized is now at 5949 or 33.9 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia (up 402 from last week). ICU Beds in Use rose by 117 and is now 2,888 or 94.8 percent capacity statewide. And Adult Ventilators in Use rose by 240 and now is at 2,092 (most since pandemic began) or 53.0 percent capacity.
In-Patient Hospital Beds in Use decreased by 40, now standing at 13,513 or 87.9 percent capacity.
The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.2 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 17.5 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.0 and 17.6, respectively.
Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,112,841 cases, 20,041 deaths, 74,245 hospitalizations and 12,135 ICU admits thru Sept. 3 from when the pandemic began.
Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8, 2021); deaths (184 on Feb. 12, 2021); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6, 2021); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12, 2020).
