Winter Weather Advisory extended to Coweta County

From Staff Reports

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has extended its Winter Weather Advisory to include Coweta County.

The NWS extended the Advisory at 8:04 a.m. to also include Heard, Fayette, Clayton, Spalding, Henry, Troup, Meriwether and Pike Counties.

According to the NWS, the Winter Weather Advisory says wet snow is a possibility in this area with accumulations ranging from a dusting to 2 inches. Winds will be gusting as high as 35 mph.

The advisory is in effect until midnight this evening.

The NWS says to plan on slippery road conditions. The combination of strong winds and the wintry precipitation could bring down trees and power lines, resulting in power outages.

A typical Winter Weather Advisory means there is an 80 percent or greater chance of a winter precipitation event – snow, freezing rain/drizzle, sleet or blowing snow – which causes inconveniences.

Here’s the latest forecast from the NWS as of 9 a.m.:

Sunday – Rain before noon, then rain and snow. High near 38. East wind 10 to 20 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Sunday Night – A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly before 7 pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
