Newnan-Coweta Habitat for Humanity recently recognized 10 individuals and one group. Lifetime Achievement Awards were given to Larry & Rita Wilson, who have volunteered 5,995 and 4,811 hours respectively. Silver award winners include a men’s group from the Rutledge Center who have volunteered over 500 hours and Mary Van Geuder, a Newnan resident who has volunteered over 300 hours. Bronze awards were given to Newnan residents: Patti Grant (148 hours), Butch Jones (117 hours), David Mitchell (155 hours), Leon Roberts (190 hours), Dennis Yokers (170 hours) and Senoia residents John Anderson (176 hours) and Kirby Belwood (123 hours).

Dr. Scott Rule, TCSG Assistant Commissioner for Data, Planning, and Research has been named President of West Georgia Technical College. A new assisted living and memory care facility is scheduled to open in the spring of 2019. The project is undertaken by the Watercrest Senior Living Group and will be located at Lower Fayetteville Road and Summerlin Blvd. The 107-unit complex includes 75 assisted living and 32 memory care units.

The Foundation board is an all-volunteer board and likes to emphasize that it is a “working board” whose members will be asked to make a significant investment of time and energy. Dr. LaToya Stephens, an OBGYN who delivers at Piedmont Newnan, completed her first Boston Marathon. “Running the Boston Marathon is like the Super Bowl of running for me. It’s the culmination of countless days of early morning trainings that was put in when no one was there watching in the cold, heat, rain, before and after long days of call, simply because that was what was on the training plan. The physical training is only half of the process. The ultimate test is surviving the mental battle during the race,” she said.

Beginning May 1, Newnan Music Center will make a couple of changes to its daily operations. First, business hours will be Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Second, Larry Mills will take over as store manager. Newnan Music Center is located at 282 Bullsboro Drive.

Executive Director Kim Ramey accepted the award on behalf of Backstreet Arts. Arnall Middle School seventh grader Jessica Yang recently won second place in the Georgia School Nutrition Association’s statewide essay contest. Yang’s placement in the GSNA’s “Let’s Move!’ contest allowed 30 Arnall students to attend the association’s Literary Consortium dinner at the University of Georgia and interact with UGA athletes. The annual essay contest is part of GSNA’s commitment to promote fitness and healthy lifestyles.

Meghan Proctor of Hubbell Jewelry Design in Newnan picked up a pair of first place awards at the recent Alabama & Georgia Jewelers Convention. Proctor earned top honors from the Georgia Jewelers Association in the Jewelry Design Contest – Category 3 and also brought home the Jeweler’s Choice Overall Award. The award-winning pendant is made of 14K white gold, with diamonds and a 27-carat aquamarine. It’s on display at Hubbell Jewelry Design, located at 772 Greisen Trail.

The three finalists for Coweta County’s 2018 Teacher of the Year were Cathrine Nolan, a science and agriculture teacher at the Central Educational Center; Tate; and Lori Beuttenmuller, English as a Second Language teacher at Welch Elementary School.

Northgate High School senior Ashley Stephens was named the recipient of the third annual Community Service Team scholarship from the Coweta Community Foundation. Members of the Community Service Team operate as a board and form relationships with local nonprofits. The goal is for these young leaders to have the opportunity to sit on a local nonprofit board by the time they are juniors or seniors in high school.
