Coweta County under Wind Advisory; Tornado Watch lifted

UPDATE: The Tornado Watch has been lifted by the National Weather Service at 6 p.m. The Wind Advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Norman, Okla., has issued a Tornado Watch for most of North Georgia, including Coweta County, until 7 p.m. this evening.

A strong cold front is moving through Alabama this afternoon and with rain likely beginning here in Coweta just after 2 p.m.  Rain chances increase to 90 percent between 3 and 5:30 p.m. today.

Behind the cold front will be much cooler temperatures. In fact, folks can expect tomorrow’s low to be near 39 degrees at 7 a.m.  with a high on Friday of only 43.

In addition to the Tornado Watch, the National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory until 11 p.m. Southwest winds will be 15-20 mph sustained with gusts of 30 to 40 mph. Trees and tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Here’s the latest weather forecast at 1:25 p.m. today from the NWS in Peachtree City.

THIS AFTERNOON – A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 2pm and 3pm, then showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. High near 70. Southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

TONIGHT – Showers and thunderstorms likely before 9pm, then a slight chance of showers between 9pm and 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

FRIDAY – Mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
