AARP Offers Free Tax Help at Central Library

From Special Reports

The Coweta County Public Library System and Volunteers from the AARP foundation have partnered once again to prepare federal and state tax returns for free. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,  major changes have been implemented. Appointment and masks are required.

Tax preparation and free electronic filing is scheduled for every Wednesday and Thursday, February 2 through April 14 at only one location, the Central Library, which is located at 85 Literary Lane in the Thomas Crossroads area. The tax prep and filing is by appointment only and residents can reserve their spot by calling 770-683-2052.

Customers are asked to go by the library before your appointment date to pick up an interview sheet to be completed and brought with you to your appointment. If you must cancel an appointment, call the library as soon as possible so that someone else can be added to the list.

Those wishing to take advantage of the free filing should bring a state issued I.D. for all taxpayers (husband & wife), a copy of last year’s (2021) income tax return, W-2 forms from all employers, unemployment compensation statements, SSA-1099 form if you were paid Social Security benefits, all 1099 forms showing interest and/or dividends and documents showing original purchase price of any  sold assets/stocks, 1099-misc. showing any miscellaneous income, 1099-R form if you received a pension or annuity, all forms indicating federal income tax paid; dependent care provider information (name, employer ID, Social Security number); Social Security cards or other official documentation for yourself and all dependents. Bring a Voided Check if you plan to have your refund direct deposited or your payment debited directly from your account.  This year, please bring the  Stimulus Payment amount received in  2021. These Stimulus Payments will NOT be taxed but should be included on your return. Those families receiving Advanced Child Tax Credit in 2021 should bring their letter (form  6419) received from the IRS in January 2022.

Clients are asked to arrive 15 minutes before their appointment to present all the forms to complete the tax return and then remain at the site to be available for questions. The return will be reviewed with the client before it is electronically filled and all forms will be returned to the client. It is not necessary to be an AARP member and all ages are welcome.

Appointments are expected to fill up very fast, so make respective reservations early by calling the Central Library at 770-683-2052.
