CEC to host Dual Enrollment ‘Option B’ Info Session
From Coweta County Schools Press Release
High school students interested in learning more about expanded college dual-enrollment opportunities available under Georgia’s “Option B” high school plan can attend a meeting at the Central Educational Center on Wednesday, January 29, at 6:30 p.m.
Option B allows high school students the opportunity to earn an associate degree, technical certificates or a technical diploma through dual-enrollment with a technical college or other associate-degree-awarding institution like West Georgia Technical College, while earning their high school diploma with fewer high-school courses.
The January 29 meeting, held in the CEC cafeteria, is open to all students, parents and others who are interested in learning more about this option.
Dual-enrollment in Georgia high schools allows students to take college-level and technical college-level courses and earn credit toward both a high school diploma and a college degree by taking courses from accredited Georgia post-secondary schools while still in high school. Courses may be taken before, during or after regular school hours, and are wholly funded by the state of Georgia’s dual-enrollment program.
Option B (formerly known as SB2 in Georgia) expands on those opportunities by allowing eligible students to fulfill high school graduation requirements by successfully completing nine required high school courses along with specific college credential programs. Participating students earn a high school diploma and two technical certificates, a technical diploma or an associate degree.
Participation in Option B requires coordination between the Central Educational Center career counselor, the West Georgia Technical College Dual-Enrollment high school coordinator, and students’ base high school counselors.
Students who wish to enter into an Option B course of study through the Central Educational Center must meet eligibility requirements, including completing a West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) admissions application and an Option B participation agreement, must meet the minimum placement requirements (with either the HOPE GPA, Accuplacer, SAT, ACT, or PSAT), must complete a required funding application, and must register for applicable classes through WGTC.
Those requirements and the opportunities associated with Option B will be discussed at the January 29 meeting at the Central Educational Center. Details about Dual-Enrollment Option B will be discussed, as well as high school courses and other high school graduation requirements under Option B, available WGTC certificate, diploma and degree program options, the German Apprenticeship program, and the experiences of former and current Option B students and parents.
The informational meeting will be led by Lauren Edgar, Dual Enrollment Executive Director for West Georgia Technical College, Dr. Dawn Revere, Career Counselor at the Central Educational Center, and Mark Whitlock, CEO of the Central Educational Center.
The Central Educational Center is located at 160 Martin Luther King Drive in Newnan. For more information, call CEC Career Counselor Dawn Revere at 678-423-2000.
