Friday: Georgia confirms over 10,000 new cases of COVID-19

Georgia surpassed 10,000 COVID-19 cases in a single-day, setting the high mark with 10,379 today. Coweta County recorded its 5th-highest single day total for cases, while neighboring counties Troup and Fayette each had over 100.

The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Friday, Jan. 8.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 83 new cases of COVID-19 with 0 deaths and 1 hospitalization on Friday. The 83 cases were the most since the county had 97 on Jan. 1. Coweta has now seen double-digit cases for a record 56 consecutive days, dating from Nov. 14.

Just eight days into the month of January, the county has registered 489 cases for an average of 61.1 per day. There have been 3 deaths and 10 hospitalizations. The 489 cases have surpassed the totals for the entire months of March (41), April (154), May (222), June (250), September (379) and October (385).

Today, the age group of 55-64 year-olds had the highest number of COVID cases with 18. The 45-54 year olds were next at 13 cases.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 5762 cases, 81 deaths (with an additional 6 probable deaths) and 225 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 23rd among all Georgia counties for most cumulative cases.

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.0 percent, and in the last two weeks, is at a record-high of 21.9 percent.

GEORGIA CASES

On Friday, Georgia broke the previous high for cases in a day by 1,660. The old mark was 8719 set on Jan. 1. Other Friday numbers included 80 deaths, 391 hospitalizations and 48 ICU admits. The last time the state had more than 80 deaths was on Sept. 23 with 96.

It’s the 32nd time in the past 33 days that the state has seen 3000-or-more cases in a single day.

Presently, a record-high 5,515 people in Georgia are hospitalized with COVID, which is 32.2 percent of all statewide hospital patients. By comparison during the spike in cases over the summer, the highest number of COVID patients hospitalized in a single day was 3200 on July 30.

The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across the state on Friday is 13,329 or at 87.4 percent capacity. ICU bed occupancy is 2695 or 91.4 percent capacity. Adult Ventilators in use in GA is presently at 1555 or 43.4 percent capacity.

Overall, Georgia has recorded cumulative totals of 620,247 cases, 10,180 deaths, 44,187 hospitalizations and 7690 ICU admits since the pandemic began.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 10.5 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is rising at 20.1 percent.
