From Special Reports

The official countdown to Christmas begins in downtown Newnan on Friday.

Main Street Newnan has several events planned starting with Plaid Friday, then followed by a Christmas Carnival and then the arrival of Santa Claus.

Plaid Friday celebrates the idea of Local and gets going as many businesses begin opening at 10 a.m. Plaid Friday gets its name from the plaid pattern, which represents weaving the individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the relaxing and enjoyable alternative to the big box store “Black Friday,” and is designed to promote both local and independently owned businesses during the holidays. Wear plaid attire during Plaid Friday and expect to save, as numerous downtown businesses will offer a significant discount to any customer wearing Plaid clothing!

At 5 p.m., the City of Newnan’s Leisure Services Department is bringing extra cheer and fun by hosting its Christmas Carnival on the North Court Square. The Carnival will be packed with games, a holiday train ride and a special visit by Santa’s live reindeer!

Then from 6-8 p.m., it’s all about Santa as he arrives downtown in a fire truck and will immediately light the Christmas tree located on the Court House Square. After the lighting of the Christmas tree, children are invited to sit on Santa’s lap and read him their Christmas list! This annual tradition in Downtown Newnan reminds us all of the importance of the holiday season: fostering hope, charity, forgiveness, and kindness.

On Saturday, it’s Small Business Saturday in downtown Newnan! Small Business Saturday is an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country. Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 and is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This event supports the local economy and promotes our community.
