The Music: Interview with Hagen Patrick; Local and Live Calendar

By Kris Youmans, Special to The Paper
This column highlights our local musicians from time to time and this month, Local and Live Music features Hagen Patrick (pictured above).
Pat is a member of Sweet Grass Sally, a band well-known here in Newnan.
L&L: This may sound cliche Pat, but what influenced you to start playing music?
Pat: I’ve been singing since I was a little kid, but I didn’t start playing until I graduated high school. That was piano, but my two best friends also played piano & much better than me, so who wants a band with 3 pianists?
I switched to guitar when I was 18. I was writing lyrics a long time before that, so putting words and music together was the next logical step. Conjuring songs up from wherever they come from is some of the best magic I’ve ever seen.
L&L: As things improve & more venues open up will you and Sweet Grass Sally hit the stage again?
Pat: Sweet Grass Sally will be coming back to live stages. Tim Shepard, Elijah Lees, Phillip Neal and I want to play in front of everybody as soon as it is safe to do so. We want everyone remaining healthy and we don’t want anyone to get sick at one of our shows. It’s not just a concert to us, it’s like playing in front of family, and we gotta keep our family safe.
L&L: Will you continue your live streams on Sunday nights, because you know folks are enjoying hearing you play their favorite cover tunes and your originals?
Pat: I’ll keep playing my Quarantine Quoncerts as long as Facebook Live lets me. Number 31 is this Sunday at 8 p.m. Having a weekly residency in my basement has been a great excuse to play music and not just binge watch every series on Netflix. I take requests, play my own songs, and learn alot of songs I never thought I would. Guitar is a continuing education thing and I’m trying not to fail the class.
L&L: What is your favorite color? Just kidding but I think it’s some shade of yellow.
Pat: My favorite color? It’s not yellow! I’ve been wearing yellow shirts when I play for about 16 years. But my favorite color is the ‘color of her eyes’…
(You can hear Hagen Patrick’s live concerts on Facebook Live every Sunday @ 8 p.m.)
