The weekend slate is once again a busy one here in the Coweta County area.

Beginning Friday, the Powell Branch Library has a “Cooking with Herbs and Spices” class and the Carnegie Library hosts Exercise is Medicine. On the gridiron, the East Coweta at Newnan battle takes the headlines as five local squads are in action.

On Saturday, the Newnan High Student-Vet Connect 5K Run kicks off the day, leading into the annual Veterans Day Parade in downtown Newnan. A Funeral for Korean War vet Billy Joe Maxwell, who had been MIA since 1950, takes place in Hogansville. The Chattahoochee Bend State Park hosts its weekly Scavenger Hunt and adds a Fall Painting event by the river. The H.E.L.P. Spay/Neuter Clinic of Newnan is offering its monthly Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic, there’s Dog and Cat adoptions in Peachtree City plus a CAREing Paws Reading Class at the PTC Library. The Southern Hands Artist Studio Tour begins its two-day self-guided tour in Coweta and Fayette Counties, a Joey’s Toy Box Fundraiser in Senoia and the Peachtree City Night Market also on the calendar. Go Kart Racing is set for the New Senoia Raceway and there’s the Pink Tribe Golf Scramble at SummerGrove Golf Course.

On Sunday, Abide Brewing Company is celebrating the 245th Marine Corps Birthday, a Mini Day Camp entitled This Girl Can for girl wrestlers will be at Northgate High, and The Heritage School is hosting its Fall Open House.

Kris Youmans has you covered for live music at various local venues in Newnan, Peachtree City and LaGrange with acts hitting the stage on Friday and Saturday.

Weather-wise, temperatures will be in the mid-50s on Friday and Saturday with partly cloudy to sunny skies and lows near 32. In fact, a Freeze Warning will be in effect from Friday night from midnight to 10 a.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, sunny skies with a high near 64.

This free service is offered to take riders from downtown Newnan to Ashley Park. Runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pickup locations at City Hall, the Governor Ellis Arnall Parking Lot on Madison Street, and Ashley Park at Dillard’s (West Entrance) and Regal Cinemas. The first pickup is at 1 p.m. at City Hall with the last full route starting at 7 p.m.

Strange LaGrange: Ghosts, Legends, & Spirited History – A Walking Tour
Join Troup County Historical Society Docent and Southern Spirit Guide, Lewis Powell, for a ghostly tour of downtown LaGrange to hear about the spirited history of Troup County and those who call it home. Tours will depart from the Legacy Museum on Main, rain or shine, and move through the downtown area. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle, and an umbrella if the weather calls for rain!

Newnan High Student-Vet Connect 5K
The 5th Annual Student-Vet Connect 5K will start and finish will be at the Newnan High School Armory Road location next to the National Guard Armory. The run will travel past historic Newnan homes and the Coweta County Veterans Memorial park. This race is a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race. All money will directly benefit local Coweta County Veterans through the local VFW, American Legion Veteran’s Relief fund and Newnan High School Student Vet Connect. Water and Snacks will be provided during and after the race.

Eye-Spy Scavenger Hunt at The Bend
Bring your camera and take a look around Chattahoochee Bend State Park for the items on our scavenger hunt list Saturdays in May. Take a picture with each item on our list and bring your completed list and pictures to the office to claim your prize. Event is free to everyone. Southern Hands Artist Studio Tour
This is a self-guided tour which will take folks to 37 artists in studios across both Coweta and Fayette Counties. Everyone can visit the working studios of Painters, Glass Artists, Metal Smiths, Potters, Fiber Artists, Jewelry Makers, Photographers, Wood Turners and more!! Some studios also open on Friday. The tour allows visitors to experience hands-on as well as sign up for classes offered by the artists and shop their studios for original works of art. READ with CAREing Paws
The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program takes place at the Peachtree City Library and helps improve children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to an animal. But not just any animal. R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team, going to schools, libraries and many other settings as reading companions for children. Funeral for Korean War Veteran MIA
The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend the funeral for Billy Joe Maxwell, a Korean War veteran, who has been Missing In Action since 1950. His remains were finally identified and returned to his family. The funeral will be at McKibben & Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville.

Joey’s Toy Box Charity Event
The second night of our double header next weekend is very special to us. It will be a fundraiser/toy drive for Joey’s Toy Box and features music from Mike August. A charity started by a very sick little boy in 2006. Though he lost his battle with cancer his family keeps his dream alive by collecting toys and providing movies and other activities for children not just at Children Healthcare of Atlanta where the charity started, but now includes Hughes Spalding Aflac Cancer Center, Grady and Emory. Let’s show some Senoia love for this amazing charity and give a sick child a little joy. Event takes place behind Beez Freeze and McMaster’s BBQ. All donations and toys go directly to Joey’s Toy Box.
