Weekly Report: Coweta nears 250 deaths due to COVID-19

THE SKINNY – Coweta County finished the past week with 7 COVID-19 related deaths, pushing its cumulative total to 249.
Below is a summary of COVID-19 data thru Friday, Sept. 10 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
COWETA COUNTY CASES
Coweta County confirmed 478 cases of COVID-19 for the past week (Sept. 4-10) with 7 deaths and 37 hospitalizations.
The 7 deaths pushed the cumulative total to one shy of 250. In fact, Coweta has recorded 16 COVID-related deaths in the past two weeks, the most in a two-week period since mid-April.
Case-wise, Coweta’s 478 cases were the 4th-highest in a week since the pandemic began and averaged 68.2 per day.
Coweta registered the 2nd- and 3rd-highest single-day totals for hospitalizations in the past week. The county had 17 on Wednesday, Sept. 8 and then 14 on Thursday, Sept. 9.
Compared to the record-setting week of Aug. 28-Sept. 3, Coweta did see drops in total cases (-157), deaths (-2) and in hospitalizations (-7) this past reporting period (Sept. 4-10).
Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 115,236 vaccinations have been applied here in Coweta County through Sept. 10, including 2,237 in the past week. Of those, 63,401 people or 44 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 55,465 or 39 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated. Those vaccinated by gender here in Coweta – Females 48.3 percent and Males 41.6 percent. By comparison, neighbor Fayette County has a vaccination rate of 62 percent with 1 dose and 56 percent fully vaccinated.
The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 11.0 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 20.4 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.9 and 20.5, respectively.
Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 11,531 cases, 249 deaths (with an additional 15 probable deaths) and 569 hospitalizations thru Sept. 10 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 25th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 17th in deaths due to COVID and 30th in COVID-related hospitalizations.
GEORGIA CASES
This past week, Georgia confirmed 38,591 new COVID-19 cases for an average of 5,513 per day. It was a decrease of 9,085 cases from last week’s reporting period (Aug. 28-Sept. 3). Friday’s daily total of 6,548 cases were the most in a single day last week for the state.
Other numbers of the past week included 540 deaths (up 9 from a week earlier), 1,683 hospitalizations (down 321) and 191 ICU admits (no change).
Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 10,001,117 vaccinations (207,220 in the past week) have been applied here in Georgia through September 10. Of those, 5,450,103 Georgia residents or 52 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 4,665,929 or 45 percent have been fully vaccinated.
Two of four patient census categories rose in the past week and were at all-time highs on Friday, Sept. 10. ICU Beds in Use rose by 110 and now stands at an all-time record 2,998 or 98.0 percent capacity statewide. And Adult Ventilators in Use rose by 18 and also is at an all-time high of 2,110 or 52.8 percent capacity.
The number of COVID Patients Hospitalized dropped by 217 and is now at 5,732 or 32.9 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia. In-Patient Hospital Beds in Use decreased by 112, now standing at 13,401 or 87.1 percent capacity.
The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.3 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 16.7 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.2 and 17.5, respectively.
Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,151,432 cases, 20,581 deaths, 75,928 hospitalizations and 12,326 ICU admits thru Sept. 10 from when the pandemic began.
Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8, 2021); deaths (184 on Feb. 12, 2021); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6, 2021); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12, 2020).
