THE SKINNY – Coweta County recorded an average of 27 new COVID cases per day in the past week, the most in a weekly reporting period since late February.

Below is a summary of COVID-19 data thru Friday, Aug. 6 from  the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 188 new COVID-19 cases for the past week with 5 deaths and 7 hospitalizations for the period of July 31-Aug. 6.

The 188 cases and per day average of 26.8 were the most in a single week since posting 257 (36.7 per day) from Feb. 21-27. It was an increase of 91 cases from the previous week (July 24-30), as well as an increase of 3 deaths and 4 hospitalizations. In addition, Coweta had 58 new cases reported on Tuesday, Aug. 3, the most in a single day since 97 on February 27.

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 102,206 vaccinations have been applied here in Coweta County through August 6. Of those, 56,183 people or 39 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 49,924 or 35 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated. By comparison, neighbor Fayette County has a vaccination rate of 58 percent with 1 dose and 53 percent fully vaccinated.

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.1 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 18.1 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.0 and 11.0, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 9297 cases, 227 deaths (with an additional 14 probable deaths) and 424 hospitalizations thru August 6 from when the pandemic began. Coweta remains ranked 23rd in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 17th in deaths due to COVID and 34th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA CASES

This past week, Georgia confirmed 21,725 new COVID cases for an average of 3103 per day. That’s an increase of 9773 cases from last week’s reporting period (July 24-30). Thursday’s daily total of 6416 new COVID cases was the most in a single day since 6572 on January 23.

Other numbers for the past week included 118 deaths (up 70), 838 hospitalizations (up 171) and 101 ICU admits (up 15).

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 8,937,955 vaccinations have been applied here in Georgia through August 6. Of those, 4,873,556 Georgia residents or 47 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 4,233,637 or 41 percent have been fully vaccinated.

All four patient census categories rose in the past week. The number of COVID Patients Hospitalized is now at 3327 or 20.4 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia (up 918 from last week). ICU Beds in Use rose by 26 and is now 2503 or 83.8 percent capacity statewide. In-Patient Hospital Beds in Use also increased by 128, now standing at 12,574 or 82.9 percent capacity. And Adult Ventilators in Use rose by 162 and now is at 1247 or 35.7 percent capacity.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 10.7 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 14.3 percent. Last week, those numbers were 10.6 and 11.0, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 953,870 cases, 18,829 deaths, 67,829 hospitalizations and 11,488 ICU admits thru Aug. 6 from when the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8, 2021); deaths (184 on Feb. 12, 2021); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6, 2021); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12, 2020).
