THE SKINNY – Coweta County recorded 5 COVID-related deaths in the past week, pushing the cumulative total above 200 since the pandemic began.

The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Sunday, April 25.  Below is a summary for the week of April 19-25 with data from the Georgia DPH on Coweta County, neighboring counties and the state of Georgia.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 67 new COVID-19 cases for the past week with 5 deaths and 7 hospitalizations. Compared to a week ago (April 12-18), Coweta had 57 cases (down 10), 7 deaths (down 2) and 9 hospitalizations (up 2).

The 5 COVID-related deaths now gives Coweta a cumulative total of 204 since the pandemic began in March 2020, some 13 months ago. Ironically, 126 of those deaths or 62 percent have come in the first 4 months of 2021 – 31 in January, 41 in February, 30 in March and 24 in April.

The county has now recorded 47 consecutive days below 20 cases. Coweta, however, did reach double-digits in cases five times in the past week, the most since March 8-14.

High marks last week included 12 cases and 3 deaths on Monday (April 19) and 2 hospitalizations on Tuesday (April 20).

In April, Coweta has posted 210 cases (8.4 per day) with 24 deaths (0.9 per day) and 32 hospitalizations (1.3 per day). For comparison, here are the March totals – 373 cases (12.0 per day) with 30 deaths (0.96 per day) and 29 hospitalizations (0.94 per day).

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.6 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 5.3 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.7 and 4.0, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 8608 cases, 204 deaths (with an additional 12 probable deaths) and 342 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 23rd in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases and 18th in deaths due to COVID.

The age group of 45-54 year olds had the most new COVID cases in the past week with 15, followed by 15-24 with 13, 25-34 with 12 and 55-64 with 11.

GEORGIA CASES

In the past week, Georgia confirmed 6628 new COVID-19 cases (down 100 from a week ago) for an average of 947 per day. The high mark for cases last week came on Friday (April 23) with 1273. Georgia now owns a streak of 57 straight days below 2000 cases, the longest stretch since May 3 to June 27.

Georgia also recorded 173 deaths in the past week (down 59 from a week ago) for an average of 25 per day. The daily high was 45 on Saturday (April 24).

Three patient census categories dropped slightly in the past week.  ICU Bed Occupancy fell to 2257 (down 46 from last week) or 75.4 percent capacity. The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across the state decreased to 11,774 (down 32 from last week) or at 77.5 percent capacity. COVID Patients Hospitalized in Georgia dropped by 1, now standing at 1216 which is 8.1 percent of all statewide hospital patients.

Adult Ventilators in use rose, now at 1067 (up 74) or 29.7 percent capacity.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.4 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 5.4 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.4 and 5.3, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 875,493 cases, 17,387 deaths, 61,088 hospitalizations and 10,001 ICU admits since the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8); deaths (184 on Feb. 12); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12).

ONE YEAR AGO

On April 25, 2020, Georgia had confirmed a cumulative total of 23,216 new COVID-19 cases with 907 deaths.

Coweta had confirmed 187 cumulative COVID-19 cases and 4 deaths on this date a year ago.

Cumulative case and death totals in Coweta and surrounding counties thru April 25 had Fulton with 2543-91, Carroll at 325-11, Spalding 189-8, Coweta 187-4, Fayette 161-8,  Troup 122-4, Meriwether 49-0 and Heard 9-1.
