Weekly Report: Coweta sets records for COVID-related deaths, hospitalizations

THE SKINNY – Coweta County surpassed three COVID-related milestones during the past week (Sept. 11-17).
Below is a summary of COVID-19 data thru Friday, Sept. 17 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
COWETA COUNTY CASES
The records during the pandemic continued to fall in the past week reporting period (Sept. 11-17) as Coweta County eclipsed two daily milestones – deaths (6 on Thursday, Sept. 16) and hospitalizations (25 on Tuesday, Sept.14) – and a weekly record for deaths with 15. The previous daily high for deaths was 5 on Sept. 3, hospitalizations was 20 also on Sept. 3 and weekly deaths was 12, last occurring February 7-13.
All total, Coweta County confirmed 354 COVID-19 cases for the past week (Sept. 11-17), including a the previously mentioned 15 deaths and 33 hospitalizations. The county averaged 50.6 cases per day last week. Coweta was down 124 cases from a week earlier (Sept. 4-10) and down in hospitalizations by 4. Deaths increased by 8 which led directly to the new milestone.
Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 118,799 vaccinations have been applied here in Coweta County through Sept. 17, including 3,563 in the past week. Of those, 65,385 people or 46 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 57,026 or 40 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated. Those vaccinated by gender here in Coweta – Females 49.7 percent and Males 42.9 percent. By comparison, neighbor Fayette County has a vaccination rate of 63 percent with 1 dose and 57 percent fully vaccinated.
The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 11.1 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 18.4 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 11.0 and 20.4, respectively.
Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 11,885 cases, 264 deaths (with an additional 18 probable deaths) and 602 hospitalizations thru Sept. 17 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 25th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 17th in deaths due to COVID and 30th in COVID-related hospitalizations.
GEORGIA CASES
This past week, Georgia confirmed 30,216 new COVID-19 cases for an average of 4,316 per day. It was a decrease of 8,375 cases from last week’s reporting period (Sept. 4-10). Tuesday’s daily total of 4,803 cases were the most in a single day last week for the state.
Other numbers of the past week included 654 deaths (up 114 from a week earlier), 1,632 hospitalizations (down 51) and 206 ICU admits (up 15). Georgia’s 560 hospitalizations on Tuesday, Sept. 14 was the 2nd-highest daily total since the pandemic started.
Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 10,212,758 vaccinations (211,641 in the past week) have been applied here in Georgia through September 17. Of those, 5,538,498 Georgia residents or 53 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 4,775,725 or 46 percent have been fully vaccinated.
All four patient census categories dropped in the past week. ICU Beds in Use drop by 96 and now stands at 2,902 or 96.0 percent capacity statewide. The number of COVID Patients Hospitalized dropped by 688 and is now at 5,044 or 29.1 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia. In-Patient Hospital Beds in Use decreased by 75, now standing at 13,326 or 86.7 percent capacity. Adult Ventilators in Use fell by 106 and is at 2,004 or 49.7 percent capacity by the end of the week. Earlier, Adult Ventilators in Use reached the 2nd-highest daily mark at 2,107 on Monday, Sept. 13.
The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.3 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 15.1 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.3 and 16.7, respectively.
Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,181,648 cases, 21,235 deaths, 77,560 hospitalizations and 12,532 ICU admits thru Sept. 17 from when the pandemic began.
Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8, 2021); deaths (184 on Feb. 12, 2021); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6, 2021); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12, 2020).
