THE SKINNY – Coweta County surpassed its weekly highs for COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations last week (Aug. 21 to Aug. 27).

Below is a summary of COVID-19 data thru Friday, Aug. 27 from  the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 530 new COVID-19 cases with 4 deaths and 50 hospitalizations during the past week – Aug. 21-27.

The 530 cases eclipsed the previous high of 495 from Dec. 27, 2020 to Jan. 2, 2021. The daily average of 75.7 cases was also a record-high for Coweta as was the COVID-related hospitalizations of 50, shattering the previous best of 13 from May 24-30, 2021.

Coweta Vaccination Rate thru Aug. 27.

Compared to a week earlier (Aug. 14-20), Coweta increased totals in cases (+206), deaths (+3) and hospitalizations (+41).

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 110,629 vaccinations have been applied here in Coweta County through August 27, including 2,749 in the past week. Of those, 61,199 people or 43 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 53,238 or 37 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated. By comparison, neighbor Fayette County has a vaccination rate of 61 percent with 1 dose and 55 percent fully vaccinated.

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.6 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 21.5 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.4 and 21.5, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 10,418 cases, 233 deaths (with an additional 14 probable deaths) and 488 hospitalizations thru August 20 from when the pandemic began. Coweta remains ranked 23rd in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 18th in deaths due to COVID and 32nd in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA CASES

This past week, Georgia confirmed 45,580 new COVID-19 cases for an average of 6511 per day. It was an increase of 8584 cases from last week’s reporting period (Aug. 14-20). Friday’s daily total of 8377 cases was the 4th highest posted by Georgia since the pandemic began.

Other numbers of the past week included 331 deaths (up 139 from a week earlier), 2133 hospitalizations (up 877) and 178 ICU admits (up 48).

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 9,575,957 vaccinations (up 230,147 from last week) have been applied here in Georgia through August 27. Of those, 5,252,673 Georgia residents or 50 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 4,467,602 or 43 percent have been fully vaccinated.

All four patient census categories rose in the past week. The number of COVID Patients Hospitalized is now at 5547 or 31.6 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia (up 396 from last week). ICU Beds in Use rose by 59 and is now 2771 or 90.9 percent capacity statewide. In-Patient Hospital Beds in Use also increased by 576, now standing at 13,553 or 87.2 percent capacity. And Adult Ventilators in Use rose by 147 and now is at 1852 (most since pandemic began) or 48.6 percent capacity.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.0 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 17.6 percent. Last week, those numbers were 10.9 and 17.1, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,065,165 cases, 19,510 deaths, 72,241 hospitalizations and 11,944 ICU admits thru Aug. 27 from when the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8, 2021); deaths (184 on Feb. 12, 2021); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6, 2021); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12, 2020).
