Weekly Reports: Cases remain on the rise here in Coweta

THE SKINNY – Coweta County averaged 23.6 new COVID-19 cases per day last week, up slightly from the previous week.

Below is the weekly summary of COVID-19 data thru Wednesday, June 1 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY

Coweta County confirmed 165 new COVID-19 cases in the past week (May 26-June 1) for an average of 23.6 per day. It’s an increase of only 3 cases from the previous week (162, May 19-25) and the most in a week since 398 from Jan. 29 to June 4 earlier this year.

The daily high number of cases came on Wednesday, June 1 with 120, but those totals were likely a sum from over the Memorial Day weekend.  

Also in the last week, Coweta did not confirm any deaths (down 1) and had 12 hospitalizations (same as last week). 

For the month of May, Coweta posted 496 cases (16.0 per day),  3 deaths,  89 hospitalizations. That’s the most in a month since February’s 629 total. The 3 deaths were the least amount of COVID-related deaths since 2 in April of 2020. And the hospitalizations were the highest total since January recorded 221 five months ago.

Per the Georgia Department of Public Health, Coweta County has reported 181,092 vaccines applied with 433 last week.  The Coweta vaccination rate is 55 percent for people with one dose and 50 percent for fully vaccinated as of June 1. In addition, 43 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated and had a booster shot. 

The overall positive test rate in Coweta was 12.8 percent on June 1, with the two-week infection rate standing at 14.6 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 12.8 and 14.8 respectively.

Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 21,670 cases, 429 deaths (with an additional 62 probable deaths) and 1,523 hospitalizations thru June 1 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 21st in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 14th in deaths due to COVID and 19th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA

Statewide, Georgia posted increases in cases, deaths and hospitalizations but dropped in numbers for ICU admits for the week of May 26-June 1.

Georgia confirmed 11,403 cases for an average of 1,629 per day for last week – an increase of 339 cases from the previous week of May 19-25.

Other last week totals included 42 deaths (up 2 from the previous week), 442 hospitalizations (up 35) and 45 ICU admits (down 3).

The number of COVID patients hospitalized last week was 574 or 3.7 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia. It was an increase of 34 from the previous week.

The overall positive test rate in Georgia was 12.1 percent on June 1, with the two-week infection rate standing at 13.6 percent.

Overall, Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,992,974 cases, 31,836 deaths, 113,933 hospitalizations and 16,104 ICU admits thru June 1 from when the pandemic began.
