Friday: Georgia sets record with 157 deaths

THE SKINNY – Georgia established a new daily record with 157 deaths on Friday, the 4th consecutive day the state has been over 100. Locally, Coweta had 3 deaths which is the most in a day since recording 3 on Oct. 9.

The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Friday, Jan. 15.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 70 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, including 3 deaths and 0 hospitalizations. The 3 deaths pushed the week’s total to 8, the most deaths in a week here in Coweta since the pandemic started. Coweta has now seen double-digit cases for a record-63 straight days, dating from Nov. 14. In addition, Coweta has been above 25 cases for the past 18 days.

Just 15 days into the month of January, the county has posted 998 cases for an average of 66.5 per day. There have been 12 deaths and 17 hospitalizations. The 998 cases have surpassed the total for every month except December (1620).

The age groups of 15-24 year-olds had the highest number of COVID cases on Friday with 15. Three groups – 25-34, 35-44 and 55-64 – had 10-or-more.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 6271 cases, 90 deaths (with an additional 6 probable deaths) and 232 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 24th among all Georgia counties for most cumulative cases and 31st in deaths.

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.6 percent, and in the last two weeks, is at 18.6 percent.

GEORGIA CASES

On Friday, Georgia confirmed its 6th-highest case total for a day with 7348 and set a daily high for deaths with 157. It’s the fourth consecutive day of over 100 deaths – Tuesday (145), Wednesday (136), Thursday (141) and today – which is the only time that has happened during the pandemic. It’s the 10th time the state has had 100-or-more deaths in a single day.

Case-wise, today’s total marked the 39th time in the past 40 days that Georgia has posted 3000-or-more cases.

Also on Friday, Georgia had 315 hospitalizations and 50 ICU admits.

Presently, 5,584 people in Georgia are hospitalized with COVID, which is 32.5 percent of all statewide hospital patients. The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across the state on Friday is at 13,276 or at 87.0 percent capacity. ICU bed occupancy is at 2761 or 91.5 percent capacity. Adult Ventilators in use in GA is presently at 1618 (record-high) or 44.7 percent capacity.

Overall, Georgia has recorded cumulative totals of 668,068 cases, 10,878 deaths, 46,208 hospitalizations and 7919 ICU admits since the pandemic began.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 10.9 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 19.0 percent.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8); deaths (157 on Jan. 15); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12).
