Tuesday: Georgia sets daily record with 145 deaths

THE SKINNY – Georgia set a record-high for deaths in a single day during this pandemic with 145 recorded on Tuesday. Locally, four counties – Coweta, Carroll, Fayette and Spalding – had 2 deaths each.

The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Tuesday, Jan. 12.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

On Tuesday, Coweta County confirmed 43 new cases of COVID-19 including 2 deaths and 0 hospitalizations. Coweta has now seen double-digit cases for a record 60 consecutive days, dating from Nov. 14, and has been above 25 cases for the past 15 days.

Just 12 days into the month of January, the county has posted 806 cases for an average of 67.2 per day. There have been 6 deaths and 12 hospitalizations. The 806 cases have surpassed the total for every month except December (1620) and August (953).

The age group of 45-54 year-olds had the highest number of COVID cases on Tuesday with 14.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 6079 cases, 84 deaths (with an additional 6 probable deaths) and 227 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 24th among all Georgia counties for most cumulative cases.

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.4 percent, and in the last two weeks, is at 19.2 percent.

GEORGIA CASES

Georgia confirmed 5982 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, making it the 36th time in the past 37 days the state has seen 3000-or-more cases in a day. Georgia’s 145 deaths surpassed the previous daily high of 122 which came on Aug. 11. It’s the 7th time the state has had 100-or-more deaths in a single day. Also on Tuesday, the state had 435 hospitalizations (5th-highest daily total) and 55 ICU admits.

Presently, a record-high 5,695 people in Georgia are hospitalized with COVID, which is 33.6 percent of all statewide hospital patients. By comparison during the spike in cases over the summer, the highest number of COVID patients hospitalized in a single day was 3200 on July 30.

The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across the state on Tuesday is 13,239 or at 86.8 percent capacity. ICU bed occupancy is 2727 or 92.3 percent capacity. Adult Ventilators in use in GA is presently at 1597 or 44.8 percent capacity.

Overall, Georgia has recorded cumulative totals of 648,694 cases, 10,444 deaths, 45,177 hospitalizations and 7799 ICU admits since the pandemic began.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 10.8 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 19.4 percent.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8); deaths (145 on Jan. 12); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12).
