A soggy, mild start to the New Year will quickly turn to freezing temperatures by Sunday night here in Coweta County, says the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

Rain chances from 30 to 90 percent dot the weekend forecast with high temperatures near 73 degrees today and Saturday and 65 on Sunday afternoon. A 40 percent rain chance is listed for today, 30 percent tonight and early New Year’s Day, before increasing to 90 percent Saturday night and 70 percent on Sunday. Southwest winds will be 5-10 mph on Friday, rising to 10-15 on Saturday with gusts to 25.

Additional rounds of thunderstorms are possible both Saturday and Sunday and some could be severe with damaging wind gusts, periods of heavy rain and an isolated brief tornado.

A strong cold front moves through the area on Sunday afternoon with winds changing from the Southwest to the Northwest, gusting to 20 mph. The rain will be ending but the low temperature drops to 29 degrees overnight – a 44-degree swing from Saturday’s high. And sunny skies make a return on Monday with a high of only 47.
