Saturday: Georgia again over 150 deaths from COVID

THE SKINNY – For the 5th straight day, Georgia was over 100 deaths. The state posted its 2nd-highest daily death total with 151. Neighboring counties with deaths on Saturday included Fayette (3), Coweta (2), Troup (2), Carroll (1) and Spalding (1).
The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Saturday, Jan. 16.
COWETA COUNTY CASES
On Saturday, Coweta County confirmed 78 new cases of COVID-19 including 2 deaths and 0 hospitalizations. It’s the 5th day in-a-row Coweta had recorded a death, the longest streak of days since this coronavirus pandemic started. In that 5-day span, Coweta has had 10 deaths.
Coweta has now seen double-digit cases for a record-64 straight days, dating from Nov. 14. In addition, Coweta has been above 40 cases for the past 11 days.
Just 16 days into the month of January, the county has seen 1076 cases for an average of 67.3 per day. There have been 14 deaths and 17 hospitalizations. The 1076 cases have surpassed the total for every month except December (1620).
The age group of 25-34 year-olds had the highest number of COVID cases on Saturday with 15. Two groups – 45-54 and 65-74 year-olds – had 10-or-more.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 6349 cases, 92 deaths (with an additional 6 probable deaths) and 232 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 24th among all Georgia counties for most cumulative cases and 30th in deaths.
The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.6 percent, and in the last two weeks, is at 18.4 percent.
GEORGIA CASES
Georgia once again turned in high daily totals for cases and deaths. The state had the 9th-highest total with 6926 cases and the 2nd-highest total for deaths with 151 on Saturday. It’s the 5th consecutive day of over 100 deaths – Tuesday (145), Wednesday (136), Thursday (141), Friday (record-high 157) and today – the longest stretch of days that has happened during the pandemic. It’s the 11th time the state has had 100-or-more deaths in a single day.
Case-wise, today’s total marked the 40th time in the past 41 days that Georgia has posted 3000-or-more cases.
Also on Saturday, Georgia had 307 hospitalizations and 35 ICU admits. It was the 5th-consecutive day with 300-or-more hospitalizations, tying the previous high mark of 5 days from July 28 thru Aug. 1.
Presently, 5,532 people in Georgia are hospitalized with COVID, which is 32.5 percent of all statewide hospital patients. The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across the state on Saturday is at 13,037 or at 85.6 percent capacity. ICU bed occupancy is at 2758 or 91.7 percent capacity. Adult Ventilators in use in GA is presently at 1571 or 43.1 percent capacity.
Overall, Georgia has recorded cumulative totals of 674,994 cases, 11,029 deaths, 46,515 hospitalizations and 7954 ICU admits since the pandemic began.
The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 10.9 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 18.5 percent.
Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8); deaths (157 on Jan. 15); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12).
