Weekly Report: Coweta County cases drop slightly; deaths & hospitalizations rise

THE SKINNY – Coweta County had a slight drop in new COVID-19 cases in the past week, but did post rises in deaths and hospitalizations.

Below is the weekly summary of COVID-19 data thru Wednesday, May 11 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY

Coweta County confirmed 94 new COVID-19 cases in the past week (May 5-11) for an average of 13.4 per day. It’s down 10 cases from the previous week (April 28-May 4) when the county posted 104. The daily high in the 7-day span was 21 cases on Friday, May 6. 

Coweta also confirmed 2 COVID-related deaths (up 2) and 28 hospitalizations (up 8) in the past week. 

Per the Georgia Department of Public Health, Coweta County has reported 172,244 vaccines applied, including 650 last week.  The Coweta vaccination rate is 52 percent for people with one dose and 48 percent for fully vaccinated as of May 11. In addition, 44 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated and had a booster shot. 

The overall positive test rate in Coweta was 12.8 percent on May 11, with the two-week infection rate continuing to slightly rise and stands at 10.0 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 12.8 and 8.9 respectively.

Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 21,210 cases, 428 deaths (with an additional 63 probable deaths) and 1,482 hospitalizations thru May 11 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 21st in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 14th in deaths due to COVID and 19th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA

Statewide, Georgia posted increases in cases and hospitalizations but dropped in numbers for deaths and ICU admits for the week of May 5-11.

Georgia confirmed 6,798 cases for an average of 971.1 per day for last week – an increase of 1,774 cases from the previous week of April 28-May 4.

Other last week totals included 66 deaths (down 14 from the previous week), 368 hospitalizations (up 28) and 27 ICU admits (down 8).

The number of COVID patients hospitalized last week was 390 or 2.5 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia. It was an increase of 10 from the previous week.

The overall positive test rate in Georgia was 12.1 percent on May 11, with the two-week infection rate standing at 7.5 percent.

Overall, Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,962,028 cases, 31,693 deaths, 112,706 hospitalizations and 15,969 ICU admits thru May 11 from when the pandemic began.
